A Carefully Orchestrated Head Hunting Solo Exhibition by Anthony Lister

According to some experts, headhunting practice was based on the belief that the head's life force or soul matter can be captured through harnessing.

What does it mean to be a part of a society collecting valuable things? The nature of these collectable things can range from football cards, artworks, Instagram followers, or trophies in the form of heads of dead enemies and fallen heroes. Well, this exhibition by Anthony Lister examined the meaning and feeling behind joining such a society.

While depicting a parade of fallen villains and heroes, the Head Hunter exhibition encourages the onlookers to explore moral perspectives on what is wrong and right. Set against the colossal canvas background, Anthony Lister's comic style colour palette, unique brushwork, and superhero characters dominate the exhibition.

These aspects present a striking representation of a longstanding signature style that Anthony Lister is known for.

The signature theatrical entrances representing Anthony Lister's creativity greeted the audience at a secret location upon arrival. Apart from the gentle smoke billowing, the strobe lights pulsing offensively from the inside illuminated the doorway intermittently. To enter the Head Hunter exhibit, one had to pass from a gateway signalled by a thick black curtain. A sense of suspense and awe was ignited in the audiences traversing the carefully orchestrated scene. It's just like a magician disappearing in the smoke cloud before his big finale.

The commemorative headless sculptures presented a powerful but darker reminder of colonial times that punished unreal crimes with equally unreal sentences. The silent and precisely placed sculptures were dominating the industrial warehouse filled with soft piano music.

Each sculpture painted with bones and abstract shapes amalgamated Anthony Lister's patterns and historical motives. Moreover, the dark totemic figures encircled with gentle music created a poignant dichotomy of tragedy and beauty.

The layout encouraged the audiences to discover more about the headless figures by exploring the art form based on different perspectives. But, upon first look, the abstract monuments as randomly placed parts were the appearance a viewer witnessed while looking upon each sculpture. Two domination sculptures were strategically positioned in the room's far left corner. One was a silent soldier dictating or guarding the room while holding a colonial rifle. Right next to the soldier stood a headless horse.

The first room's most significant work was positioned on the final wall. It's a massive canvas that served as the celebration and a tribute for Anthony Lister's beloved friend, Magnus. A deep sense of emotional and melancholic composition emanating from the powerful painting captivated the viewers. The painting portrayed Magnus as a dark figure intensely surveying the scene before them while wearing a menacing clown face.

Partially obstructed by the prison bars that were theatrically constructed, an opening could be seen directly between the installation of masks and Magnus. The viewer has to enter the exhibition's second part by squeezing through the bars. Anthony Lister made sure to mark poetic and Horripilant annotations on the floor and bars to signal to step over the threshold into the enlightenment. The message was served by offering a last reminder of hard times, the hunt, and punishments.

Here you go! Indeed, you'll agree that witnessing such a marvel would have invoked the emotions in the audiences that only a good artist can do.
