The two biggest inspirations for Anthony Lister, especially for his superheroes series, come from Max Gimblett and Henri Matisse.

Max was a mentor to Anthony Lister during his time in New York City. He has discreetly invited his mentors working style into his paintings. While mentoring the young artist, Max painted with a mop. He was tracking the scope of the canvas. Also, Max added gestural depictions of movement in monochrome figurative expressionism.   

Apart from Max Gimblett, Anthony Lister always took inspiration from Henri Matisse. He invited a precarious and odd nature to his art by observing Henri use long poles to access high areas.
